HOBBS & SHAW 4K UHD Blu-ray Review: A Definitive most-own 4K UHD Blu-ray

I never would have imagined a movie about street racers who steal and sell DVD players would turn into a beloved multi-billionaire dollar franchise, but THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS did just that, spawning eight sequels so far (there will undoubtedly be more). I joined the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise chain when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson came on board. This was when the franchise started to get better with each new sequel and not just becomes of The Rock’s literally colossal onscreen charisma, but each new film got more ridiculous than the last with slack-jawing stunts. The movies or formulaic and have pretty predictable plots, but their physics-defying stunts are just too fun to pass on. The franchise’s latest outing — a spinoff and one of the most fun I’ve had watching a movie — is FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW, and is no exception to the wild physics-defying stunts, enough cheesy one-liners with enough testosterone for 12 more FAST AND FURIOUS movies.

Here’s the thing, it works and what makes these movies so much enjoyable and fun. Each movie gets crazier than the next. In the last F&F film, THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS, The Rock literally kicks a rocket coming at him while hanging out a car driving on ice. If that’s not awesome to you, it’s time you live a little.

When you watch a FAST AND FURIOUS franchise, you have to accept and appreciate all of the above. These movies make going to the movie theater fun. (Who doesn’t want to watch cars you and I will never be able to afford to drop out of a plane?)

HOBBS & SHAW stars The Rock and Jason Statham as Hobbs and Shaw, respectively, Vanessa Kirby, and “Black Superman” Idris Elba as a cyborg with a loyal motorcycle. Stuntman-turned-Director David Leitch (JOHN WICK (uncredited), ATOMIC BLONDE, DEADPOOL 2) saw TANGO & CASH potential, and literally cashed in on the opportunity, teaming these two characters up who deliver cheesy but expected classic one-liners with consistent tolerable meathead banter. You’ve probably seen the movie, and it’s why you’re reading this right now. You already know how incredibly fun this bonkers movie is. The stunts are nuts, and it doesn’t matter if the laws of gravity are ignored, they are still so much fun to watch. HOBBS & SHAW is why we go to the movies — it makes us forget for a few hours life’s every stress that’s waiting for us to return to when it’s over. It’s a nice break from reality.

I’m not going to recap the movie, I’m going to tell you about the 4K UHD, which is one of the best 4K transfer released so far. Almost all of the F&F films look stunning in 4K, but this one is by far my favorite transfer so far. It might be the neon colors used on the film, or that I can see The Rock’s perfect white teeth when he smiles, but if I were to recommend a movie to someone new to the 4K UHD home entertainment world, it would be HOBBS & SHAW. The quality is so staggering and does a terrific job of making it challenging to see the CGI, which is something easy to spot with 4K since this format’s quality is so clear. The 4K quality for HOBBS & SHAW is so clear and colorful, you can spot the pores on his neck where he forgot to clip a loose lingering hair on his neck.

One important thing I’ve learned since venturing into the world of 4K UHD home release is sound. I have a Sony - 7.1.2-Channel hi-res Soundbar with a wireless subwoofer that’s so good, the room shakes when the action in movies hit. Out of all studios and distributors, Universation Home Entertainment has the best sound. Typically, I have to have the volume set about 21-23, but with UHE, it’s way too banging higher than 15. This is an essential element in 4K UHD physical discs all companies need to be on board with. They all may all have Dolby Atmos, but UHE clearly has a secret ingredient that’s making it the number one studio when it comes to audio.

HOBBS & SHAW comes packed with over 80 minutes of bonus features. My favorite is the alternate opening, which I wished they used versus the one which is used because it immediately sets up the banter and insults Hobbs and Shaw throw at each other the whole movie, while setting up the story at the same time. It’s the same clips already in the movie but just shows how vital film editing is in the movie. A film editor is perhaps the second director sitting in the passenger seat of the first director’s Lamborghini. A film editor can make a movie look slick (the late Sally Menke was an editor and is a significant reason why you love Tarantino films. Her editing enhanced his movies, making them 10x better with all that dialogue).
